Jaime Humberto Hermosillo

Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, one of Mexico's most celebrated and honored directors, has been selected by the Board of the Ajijic Festival Internacional de Cine to receive the third annual Festival Tribute Award.

Hermosillo is one of the most successful Mexican directors of the last twenty years. Born in Aguascalientes, a small town in central Mexico, Hermosillo's films have dissected the hypocrisy of Mexican middle class and "torn the curtain" behind which many perversities are hidden. Hermosillo found a great success with “Doña Herlinda y su hijo” (1985) , a comedy about a mother of a gay doctor who manipulates her son, his male lover and his fiancée to fulfill her desire of becoming a grandmother. Gay themes in Hermosillo's films can be found in “Matinée” (1977), “El cumpleaños del perro” (1974) and “Las Apariencias engañan” (1978). Hermosillo has also been an explorer of film language. “La Tarea” (1990) is one of the most complex exercises in film style in recent years (the film was shoot in one long shot, from the POV of a camcorder). Hermosillo's films present a fresh look on Mexican society. He prefers the comedy, something difficult to find in Mexican cinema nowadays. Hermosillo has also helped other young Mexican directors. He acted as Production Consultant on the film “Mañana” directed and written by Arturo Villaseñor that just finished shooting in Guadalajara. “Mañana” stars Guadalajara actors Jesús Pérez Gallardo, Lilí Castañeda and Lara Gallardo, who is the daughter of Festival Vice President Isabel Fuente. The film just being completed in Guadalajara will have its world premier at the Festival on Friday November 9th at 8:00 PM.

Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, el aclamado director de cine mexicano, ha sido elegido para recibir el tercer premio-homenaje del Ajijic Festival Internacional de Cine 2001, en reconocimiento por su exitosa trayectoria.

Hermosillo es uno de los directores mexicanos más exitosos de los últimos veinte años. Nacido en Aguascalientes, una pequeña ciudad en el centro de México, sus películas han puesto en evidencia la hipocresía de la clase media mexicana, y descorrido la cortina detrás de la cual muchas perversidades se esconden. Hermosillo tuvo un gran éxito con “Doña Herlinda y su hijo” (1985), una comedia acerca de la madre de un médico homosexual, quien manipula al joven amante gay y a la novia de su hijo para satisfacer sus deseos de ser abuela. Otras películas de Hermosillo con tema ‘gay’ son “Matinée” (1977), “El cumpleaños del perro” (1974) y “Las Apariencias engañan (1978). Hermosillo también ha sido un innovador del lenguaje fílmico. “La Tarea”(1990) es uno de los más complejos ejercicios de estilo en los años recientes (la película fue filmada en una larga toma, desde el punto de vista de una cámara de video.) Las películas de Hermosillo representan una mirada fresca a la sociedad mexicana.

Hermosillo ha impulsado y colaborado con otros cineastas Mexicanos, es asesor de producción de la película "Mañana," que acaba de ser realizada en la Ciudad de Guadalajara escrita y dirigida por Arturo Villaseñor, con los actores y actores Jesús Pérez Gallardo, Lilí Castañeda , Lara Gallardo y Arturo Villaseñor. La película es la Opera Prima de Arturo y será la premier en el Festival el viernes 9 de Noviembre a las 8.00 PM.

Rodolfo (Marco Antonio Treviño) is a young bachelor doctor in Guadalajara who has a love affair with a younger music student, Ramon (Arturo Meza). When Rodolfo's mother begins to urge his son to get married, he asks modern and open-mind Olga (Lutecia Lupercio) to become his wife. Ramon is heart-broken, but Doña Herlinda (Guadalupe del Toro) thinks she has the solution to make everybody happy. She asks Ramon to live with her, along with Rodolfo and Olga. Filmed in part at the Montecarlo Hotel in Chapala. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Cuando la madre de Rodolfo comienza a pedirle urgentemente a su hijo que se case, ésta le propone matrimonio a Olga (Lutecia Lupercio) una amiga progresista y de amplio criterio. A touching and funny film, but deep as well. It is almost entirely set in the apartment that the young Nicolas shares with his widowed grandmother, his mother and the beautiful Isabel, the tenant of a makeshift bedroom. Nicolas wants to be a filmmaker, wants to join his father, who followed his ideals to Cuba and Nicaragua, and wants to make love to Isabel. The mother doesn't want to lose him, the grandmother still longs for her long deceased sea captain husband, and Isabel has her secrets. The acting is good and the dialogues are pure joy. In Spanish with English subtitles.
Una película conmovedora y divertida, pero a la vez profunda. Casi todo sucede en la casa que el joven Nicolás comparte con su abuela, su madre e Isabel, una hermosa inquilina. Nicolás quiere ser cineasta, encontrarse con su padre, quien en pos de sus ideales se fue primero a Cuba y luego a Nicaragua, y quiere hacerle el amor Isabel. La madre no quiere perderlo, la abuela todavía extraña a su difunto esposo, un capitán de fragata, e Isabel tiene sus secretos. La actuación es buena y los diálogos son un deleite. Don Enrique is a widower that lives with a hope that his daughter Teresa will return home. He assures everyone that she is a famous actress of the classic Greek tragedies who travels around the world performing at the best theaters. Arturo Villaseñor

Arturo Villaseñor ha escrito varios guiones: "Obdulia," "Encuentro inesperado" y "El misterio de los Almendros." Ha colaborado en adaptaciones no filmadas de "Elogio de la madrastra," de Vargas Llosa, y "El callejón de los milagros," de Mafus. Dirigió y escribió los videos: "El Fastidio" y "Los enredos de mamá." Se han publicado: "Encuentro Inesperado" (guión), "María Rojo" (ensayo sobre la vida y obra de la actriz), "Jaime Humberto Hermosillo en el país de las apariencias" (ensayo sobre la obra y vida del realizador). Escribió y dirigió los cortometrajes: "La felicidad de la señora Consuelo" y "El día que mi mamá salió de compras." Fue Asesor Creativo del Director en las películas: "De noche vienes," "Esmeralda," y "Escrito en el cuerpo de la noche." Arturo Villaseñor, has written several screen plays: “Obdulia,” “An unexpected encounter” and “The Almond's mystery.” He has collaborated in screenplay adaptations that have not been filmed like “Elogio de la Madrastra” from Vargas Llosa and “Callejon de Los Milagros” from Mafus. Directed and wrote the videos: “El Fastidio” and “Los Enredos de Mamá.” He has published: “Unexpected Encounter” (script,) “María Rojo” (essay about the actress’s life and work), “Jaime Humberto Hermosillo in the country of apparent” (an essay about his life and work.) He wrote and directed the short subjects: “Mrs.. Consuelo's Happiness” and “The Day my Mother went shopping.” He was creative assessor director to the movies: “Esmeralda,” “Comes at Night” and “Written on the Body of the Night.”

John Neville

Festival 2001 is also hoping to have accomplished stage, film and television actor attend Festival 2001 with his most famous film “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.” At press time we were unable to reconfirm his attendance, so watch for updates at the Cinemas.

John Neville has made over 50 film and TV appearances since the 1950s. His films include “Crime and Punishment,” “Custody of the Heart,” “Bonhoeffer: Agent of Grace,” “Sunshine,” “Road to Wellville” and “Little Women.” TV series appearances include “Amazon,” “The X-Files” and “Star Trek.” He appeared in England, United States and Canada in many theatrical roles and served as the Artistic Director of Ontario’s Shakespeare Festival during the 1980’s. Mr. Neville now winters on the Jalisco coast in Barra de Navidad. He has agreed to a special showing of his most famous film where he played the title role, “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.” In addition, he will host a Forum on the making of this film as well as his life in theater, film and television.
John Neville ha hecho más de 50 películas y televisión desde los años 50. Sus películas incluyen Crimen y Castigo, Custodia del Corazón, Bonhoeffer: “Agente de Gracia,” “Sunshine,” “Camino a Wellville” y “Mujercitas.” En series de televisión aparece en “Amazonas,” “Los X-Files,” y “Viaje a las Estrellas.” Se ha presentado en Inglaterra, Estados Unidos y Canadá en muchos papeles teatrales y ha sido el Director Artístico del Festival Shakesperiano en Ontario desde los años 80. El Sr. Neville pasa los inviernos en la Costa de Jalisco en Barra de Navidad. Ha aceptado tener una presentación especial de su famosa película “Las Aventuras del Baron Munchausen,” donde protagonisa el rol principal que lleva el nombre de la película. La historia de un pequeño grupo de actores decididos a llevar a cabo la actuación del cuento popular Europeo del Baron Munchausen cuando el viejo personaje (John Neville) aparece sintiéndose el verdadero Baron. El empieza por contarles la verdadera historia fantástica, de la verdadera vida y los altos y bajos completamente borrosos. Una buena historia no sólo para adultos como para niños de 6 a 12 años con Robin Williams como el Rey de la Luna. John Neville nos habla de su experiencia en filmación como en el escenario teatral. Desde los años 50 ha participado en películas y televisión y desde los años 80 ha sido director Artístico del Festival Sheksperiano en Stratford, Ontario. Su role más famoso ha sido el del Baron Munchausen en la película antes mencionada. El foro será directamente después de la projección de la película.
